If you connect Bluesky to tools like schedulers, automation scripts, or integrations, use an app password instead of your main account password.
Quick link
Open this while logged in:
https://bsky.app/settings/app-passwords
Step-by-step
- Log in to your Bluesky account.
- Open Settings.
- Go to App passwords. Depending on the app version this may be under Privacy and security (sometimes under Advanced).
- Click Add app password.
- Give it a clear name, for example:
socialcmd-macminizapier-postingn8n-bot
- If Bluesky asks about permission scope (for example Direct Messages), only enable what you actually need.
- Click Create (or Next).
- Copy the generated password immediately.
Important
- Bluesky only shows the app password once.
- Store it in a password manager.
- If you lose it, delete that app password and create a new one.
How to use it
Use your normal Bluesky handle plus this app password in the third-party tool:
- Handle example:
yourname.bsky.social - Password:
xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
Security best practices
- Create one app password per tool.
- Name each password clearly so you can revoke it fast.
- Revoke any app password you no longer use.
- Never paste your main Bluesky account password into third-party tools.
